Advent Calendar Day 10 - Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" is another of the stop-motion classics most closely associated with Rankin-Bass. A favorite of so many children, I have to admit mixed feelings on this one. As a girl who grew up with a red birthmark centered on my nose, I had appreciation for Rudolph's plight; probably more than most. Therefore, I celebrated greatly in his victorious flight of the finale. I also loved the toymaker dentist and felt I was a Misfit Toy.But while I always enjoyed the song (and still do with my kiddos), the TV show added an unsettling element. Santa Claus is represented as part of the anti-red nose prejudice. Santa dismisses Rudolph out of hand solely because he is different. This is completely antithetical to my vision of Santa Claus. To my mind, Santa has always been the rare individual who loves everyone just as they are.Nonetheless, my kids beg to see it every year and every year we do. I try to use it as a discussion starting point about prejudice. I hope that it only inspires Christmas fun in them and no angst as it does in me.15 Days to Christmas...Click on Rudolph's nose to visit tonight's Advent Calendar.Rudolph-the-Red-Nosed-Reindeer
