How do you feel about money? I mean, really.Me? I often feel overwhelmed, even stupid at times. Yes, I said “stupid”. Strong and ugly word, I know. I don’t even let my kids say it but it really describes how I feel sometimes. I am a pretty smart girl but money leaves me flustered.
Money, Money, MONEY!
This was never more so than when my husband and I finally took the big step to buy our first home. Aside from the children, our home purchase is the single largest accomplishment of our lives. Buying a home is hard work. From the process of finding a home to making sure you’re purchasing a home that you can afford for the next three decades, it is a full-time job. Let’s think that through. A 30-year mortgage means yep… 30 years. I will be 75 when my house will be paid off. (For reference, we have made six of 360 payments. We are VERY proud of those 6 payments! We own about 1.5% of our home – WOOT!)
Home buying is hard work!
Looking back, there are things I wish we had known beforehand. If you have not yet embarked on this journey, please pack your bags well. In other words, get all those little duckies in a row. Ask for help. It’s okay. I know we had so many questions and I wished we had a hand to hold. These days, we are looking to planning for our kids’ college and long-term retirement planning. You know, the easy stuff.Because of that, I am so excited to see how Capital One is redesigning banking with its Banking Reimagined Tour this weekend. They are committed to taking the fear out of finance with a unique combination of technology (yeah, they know we live on our smart phones and rather bank there than anywhere) with human connection. Because, let’s be honest, when we have a problem, we want a real, live human to help us.Coming to Austin this weekend is the beginning of a long-term commitment from Capital One to rework the banking experience and help us all feel more confident about money. I don’t know about you but that makes me feel happy.
Taking my financial choices out for a drive
Tomorrow, I will be headed to wave down the biggest truck on the financial road. If images of me riding shotgun with Burt Reynolds in a Trans Am come to mind, that is fine. I will definitely be channeling my inner Sally Field.Near the Domain, this set of Big Wheels rolling will be carrying a money experience like no other. With giant touch screens and virtual reality 4-D tours, I will get a whole new look at my relationship with money.Seriously, not only are they taking the fear out they are putting the fun in. And I am NOT one who usually thinks of money as fun. I may or may not still have my taxes waiting in a pile on my desk today. (YES! I know there is only one week left. Again, not fun!)But this is the only beginning!Capital One is bringing coaches to the money game. Capital One’s Money Coaches, not financial advisors, are like life coaches for your finances. If you are like me, you feel like an appointment with a financial advisor would be a waste of time for me and them. I am pretty sure that they will not be impressed with the $20 bucks that I have at the end of the month to invest -haha! But these are Money Coaches. They are looking to help you discover your financial priorities and make a path to reach those goals. It’s a free service offered to anyone, not just Capital One customers, and I will be doing one of my own very soon. Stay tuned for more! Finally, two Capital One Cafés are coming. And while you may wonder if Austin could possibly need another café, this is more than coffee. Though it is Peet’s so that’s a point in its favor! These will be community based places providing financial educational services, meeting rooms, and staff to help you meet your financial goals. And while, these have not yet made their home here yet, I will get to hear all about them at the Banking Reimagined Tour, which is coming to town to celebrate these upcoming Café spaces. Can you tell I am excited?2017 was the year, hubby and I declared would be our year to conquer our finances and I really feel like this is a HUGE step on that path.
