Worth a Million! - Zach's "Million Dollar Quartet"
Zach has done it again!
The Zach Scott Theatre is quickly making a name for bringing beloved musical masters to life. Billie Holliday last spring and now Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and CarlPerkins in their new production, "Million Dollar Quartet".
I received a pair of tickets for the purpose of this review. All opinions are mine. It is my Universe, after all.
The show is a fast-paced look at one fateful night in 1956 that brought together these legends at Sun Records. The starting place for them all. Each man is at a distinct and different place in his career. Elvis sits at the top of his career while Perkins watches his light start to flicker. (Having watched Presley perform his song "Blue Suede Shoes" weeks before didn't help.) Cash sits at a precipice while Jerry LEE Lewis is a scrappy piano player who knows he is destined for nothing but success! The four battle personalities and music while Sun Records' future lies at stake. This show has great music - obviously - but it is the measured and nuanced performances that make it a great show. Playing big personalities that we all know can bring a show into rough waters of mimicry and caricature but these men steer clear of those pitfalls. Even the flamboyant Lewis is layered with an insecurity that shows through all his brash bravado. The show plays through September 3rd and I highly recommend it to my Austin friends.
