Women Learn to Surf: How Traci Got Her Boogie Back

At the top of 2019, I was filled with vim and vigor, ready to take on the world. I chose Courage as my word. I created a calendar. I bought many colored pens. I was pumped.

Halfway through the year & I'm boogied out

Fast forward six months and I find myself at a loss. I could explain why life got ahead of me - surprise homeschooling, chronic illness flares, family issues - but really it doesn’t matter. (If you are hearing Bohemian Rhapsody in your head now, you’re welcome). What matters is that I need to get my groove back. All apologies to Terry McMillan. (And now I gave you Nirvana. You are guaranteed a wonderful day of earworm-ing).

My family and I were invited on a sponsored trip to Schlitterbahn Galveston. All opinions are mine. It is my Universe, after all.

Back to my flailing 2019. Because of great friends and a great company, Texas Travel Talk, I got an opportunity to join with Schlitterbahn Waterparks in celebrating National Women Learn to Surf Day.

I needed something to throw me out of my comfort zone. And nothing throws you more than crashing water.

To my surprise, Schlitterbahn has full boogie board experiences in all four of its Texas parks. And on this day, they brought in professional surfers and boogie-ers to give us the low-down, Boogie-ers or boogie boarders? Oh well, people who know how to rock a boogie board.

Time to Boogie

So to Schlitterbahn Galveston, I went and headed straight to BoogieBahn. (Cute name, huh?) And while I waited my turn, I had the greatest opportunity to talk with other women with similar dreams and desires and a similar need to turn the emotional page.

And here’s what happened.

Several times. But rather than feeling like I was failing, I was laughing. I even took a bow. Remember, I am an actress, I can’t resist an audience.

I got some coaching and I got a little better.

And then I got a lot better.

And I did this!

Here's how I got my boogie back

I was actually amazed by myself. I don’t know if I have ever said that before. And no, I am not ready to zip up a wetsuit and head out to Mavericks, but I just did something hard. Really hard. I feel really proud and ready to conquer other hard things.

From Courage to Confidence

So hey 2019, let’s boogie. I’m ready now.

Have you ever surfed? What hard thing have you done?
Did it give you confidence?

A big thank you to Schlitterbahn and Texas Travel Talk for making this happen.
